Grid trading on gold places a ladder of orders at set distances around price, adding XAUUSD positions as it moves and closing them on swings back. Spacing, volume per level and the maximum number of levels come from settings you control.
Gold often moves in large steps, so narrow spacing can fill many levels within minutes while wide spacing may hardly trade. Some systems scale the gap with volatility, for example through ATR, which changes how quickly exposure builds when price runs.
Look for a cap on open levels, an equity stop that closes the whole basket, a news pause and a clear rule for when the grid stops adding orders. Check too whether the bot needs a hedging account, since a netting account keeps one net position per symbol.
A one-way trend keeps filling levels against the basket, so open volume, margin use and floating loss grow together until price turns or a limit closes everything. That is how grid systems suffer their deepest drawdowns, and a backtest may never have met a trend that strong.
Use the backtester in cTrader's desktop app over periods with strong gold trends as well as ranges, and watch equity, not just balance. A grid can look smooth on closed trades while open losses grow, and the knowledge base has a sample grid cBot that shows how such logic is coded.
