Supertrend is a trend-following line placed a multiple of average true range above or below the median price of each bar. When a candle closes through the line, it flips to the other side of price and changes colour, marking a new trend direction.
No single setting fits every market, because the ATR period and multiplier decide how far the line sits from price. A higher multiplier flips less often and later, a shorter ATR period responds sooner to volatility, so compare values separately on gold, indices and currency pairs and on each timeframe you use.
Sideways price keeps crossing the line, so it flips back and forth and each flip arrives after the move has started. The indicator also lags by design, and the forming bar can change colour before it closes, so many traders judge flips on closed bars only.
No, the line only draws on the chart, some versions add alerts, and the trading decision stays with you. Some traders move a stop by hand to the Supertrend level as a trailing reference, and automating that would require a separate cBot that you set up and run yourself.
Apply it to several symbols and timeframes, as the Help Centre suggests, and scroll back to count flips that reversed quickly. Store builds of Supertrend need the desktop cTrader app on Windows or Mac, and watching some live bars shows whether past flips stay where they were drawn.
