FAQ
In retail trading on cTrader, HFT usually means a high-frequency cBot that opens and closes many short trades, reacting to ticks rather than finished bars. It differs from institutional HFT, which relies on co-located servers and direct market access that a retail account does not have.
They send many market or limit orders in rapid bursts, so spread and commission are paid on every trade and quickly add up against small targets. Settings such as a maximum spread filter, a trade cap per session and trading hours decide how often costs are incurred.
Only tests run on tick data with realistic spreads and commission say much, because bar-based tests can assume fills that never happened. Compare results after costs, the average gain per trade against the spread, and how results change when costs are raised slightly.
Speed-dependent logic is sensitive to execution quality, spreads and latency, which differ between brokers and even between moments on the same account. Slippage of a fraction of a pip can turn a small edge into losses, and some broker terms limit very frequent trading.
Either can work: a cloud instance runs around the clock without your computer, while a local one depends on your machine and connection staying up. Whichever you choose, start on a demo account and watch the instance log for rejected orders or errors before using real funds.
