VWAP, the volume-weighted average price, divides cumulative typical price times volume by cumulative volume since a reset, usually the session start. Busier bars pull the line harder, and on forex the weight is tick volume, so readings vary with each broker's feed.
Price holding above VWAP is often read as an intraday buying bias and price below it as a selling bias. In ranges price tends to rotate around the line, while on trend days it can stay on one side for hours, so a touch alone is not a signal.
Bands are drawn at standard-deviation multiples above and below VWAP, showing how stretched price is from its session average. An anchored VWAP starts from a bar you choose, such as a swing low or a news candle, and tracks the average price paid since that event.
A beginner can grasp it as the session's average price, though using it well takes context from higher timeframes. Experienced traders often add the prior day's high and low or a weekly anchored VWAP, because in choppy sessions the line alone gives conflicting cues.
A typical VWAP resets at each new day or session, based on the broker's server time or an hour the tool lets you set. Store versions need cTrader's desktop platform on Windows or Mac, and cTrader price alerts can notify you when price reaches a band or level you mark.
