FAQ
A fair value gap (FVG) is a three-candle imbalance where a strong middle candle leaves the first candle's high and third candle's low apart. In a decline the roles flip, and the indicator shades that untouched space as a zone price may revisit.
Many treat it as a zone where price may react, noting whether it gets partly filled, fully filled or respected. The midpoint, called consequent encroachment in ICT terms, is a common reference; a gap price closes straight through is usually treated as invalidated, and reactions are never assured.
Lower timeframes such as M1 and M5 print lots of small gaps that often fill within minutes, while H1, H4 and daily gaps are fewer and larger. Gold, index CFDs and crypto produce wide gaps around news and session opens, so a minimum-size filter, often in pips or ATR terms, helps cut noise.
It can until the higher-timeframe candle that completes the pattern closes; an H4 gap shown on an M15 chart may shrink or vanish during those hours. Look for tools that mark gaps only after confirmation, or treat unconfirmed zones as provisional, and check how filled gaps are removed or recoloured.
