A currency strength meter scores each major currency by averaging its moves against the others, such as the euro's change across every euro pair. Comparing the scores shows which currencies have been firm or soft over the lookback, and each developer's formula differs.
The reasoning is that a pair whose two sides are moving in opposite directions may trend more cleanly than one where both drift together. Strength readings only describe the recent past, though, and they can reverse abruptly around central bank decisions or data releases.
The lookback period and timeframe are the main inputs, since a meter on H1 and one on daily can disagree. Versions may also let you choose which pairs feed the calculation, the smoothing and alert rules, and symbols with broker suffixes may need mapping by hand.
Yes. Some strength tools are plugins, which can show a dashboard panel instead of drawing on a chart. Web-based plugins run in every cTrader app and native ones only in Windows and Mac, like custom indicators, so check the product type and any trial terms before installing.
Some traders check strength on a daily or H4 lookback to choose which pairs to watch, then use their usual chart tools on a lower timeframe for timing. The meter does not trade or predict; it summarises past moves, so conflicting readings between timeframes are common and deserve caution.
