A yen index, often labelled JXY, is a single line showing the Japanese yen's strength against a basket of other currencies rather than one pair. Indicators for it combine several JPY pairs and plot the result in a panel or on the chart, without placing trades.
They take quotes such as USDJPY, GBPJPY, EURJPY and CHFJPY, invert them because the yen is the quote currency in each, and combine the results, sometimes with weights. A rising line then usually means a firmer yen, and baskets and weights differ between indicators, so read each description.
Compare the currency basket, the weighting method, the smoothing period, whether it draws in a separate panel or over price, and the alert options. Many yen strength indicators cost nothing in cTrader Store, so you can try several on the same chart before paying for one.
Yes. The line depends on the chosen basket and on your broker's prices, so different indicators can disagree, and like any average it reacts after the move. Official intervention or a Bank of Japan surprise can also flip yen strength faster than the line shows.
