WHAT IT DOES
Custom Range Volume Profile addresses two limitations of most volume profile tools: the range is decided for you, and the detail is capped by your chart timeframe.
Preset ranges such as sessions or the visible screen cut through moves at arbitrary points. A profile built from chart-timeframe bars also gets coarse quickly: a single H4 bar says very little about where inside its range volume actually traded.
This indicator removes both constraints.
You place two anchors on the bars that matter, and the profile is built for exactly that range. Volume is then read from the finest timeframe that covers it, so the profile keeps its detail whichever timeframe you are viewing.
The range is yours. The resolution is automatic.
WHY A CUSTOM RANGE?
The Problem
The moves you want to analyze rarely match a session boundary or a screen edge. A trend leg, a consolidation, or the stretch between two key reversals has its own start and end. A profile that ignores those boundaries mixes volume from different phases of the market and blurs the levels that matter.
The Solution
Custom Range Volume Profile lets you define the phase. Drag the start anchor to where the move began and the end anchor to where it ended. The indicator measures the highest high and lowest low between them, then builds the profile inside that box. Move an anchor and the profile recalculates.
Why Multiple Volume Modes?
Total volume shows where activity concentrated. Up/Down shows how each row split between advancing and declining bars. Delta shows which side dominated each row. The same range can be read three ways, and you can switch between them without reopening the settings.
THE CORE CONCEPT
A session profile answers: "Where did volume trade during this preset period?"
This indicator answers: "Where did volume trade during the exact move I chose?"
The calculation runs in one pass:
- You place two anchors on bars of your choosing
- The indicator finds the highest high and lowest low between them and draws the range box
- The box is divided into price rows, either a fixed number of rows or a fixed number of ticks per row
- Each source bar's volume is distributed across the rows its high-low range overlaps, and classified as up (close above open) or down
- The row with the most volume becomes the Point of Control (POC)
- The Value Area expands outward from the POC, toward the side with more volume, until it covers your chosen percentage of total volume (default 70%). Its edges are VAH and VAL
You choose how the profile is drawn:
- Total: one bar per row, sized by total volume
- Up/Down: each row split into up volume and down volume
- Delta: total volume as a pale bar, with the size of the delta as a solid bar colored by the dominant side
KEY FEATURES
Two Draggable Anchors
- Start and end anchors snap to the bar and to that bar's open, high, low, or close
- Lock Anchors prevents accidental moves
- Instance ID supports multiple independent profiles on the same chart
- Deleted anchors are restored automatically
Automatic Source Timeframe
- Auto mode scans a list of timeframes (default m1, m5, m15, m30, h1, h4, D1) from the finest upward
- It picks the finest one that reaches the start of your range and stays under 5,000 bars, loading older history when needed
- The list is fully editable, or you can use the chart timeframe instead
- Invalid entries in the list are flagged directly on the chart
Profile, POC and Value Area
- Three volume modes: Total, Up/Down, Delta
- POC line, with optional VAH and VAL lines and labels
- Rows inside the Value Area are drawn in their own colors
- Adjustable Value Area percentage (1–100%)
Flexible Row Layout
- Rows layout: a target number of rows, with the tick size per row chosen to land closest to it
- Ticks layout: a fixed number of ticks per row
- Row gap for visual separation (display only, it does not affect calculation)
Extensions and Labels
- Volume bars and levels can extend to the right edge of the chart
- Volume labels formatted as K / M / B, showing total, up/down, or signed delta depending on mode
- Custom font family and size
On-Chart Controls
- Switch volume mode, row layout, extensions, labels, POC and Value Area directly from a control bar on the chart
- Position: top or bottom, left or right, or hidden
- Changes are saved per symbol and per instance
- A reset button restores the values from the Properties dialog
READING THE CHART
- Blue Anchor Icons: Start and end of the range. Drag to redefine
- Shaded Box: The price range being profiled
- Teal Bars: Up volume
- Red Bars: Down volume
- Darker Teal / Red: Rows inside the Value Area
- Yellow Line: Point of Control (POC)
- Blue Line: Value Area High (VAH, optional)
- Purple Line: Value Area Low (VAL, optional)
- Delta Mode: Pale bar is total volume, solid bar is the delta, colored by the dominant side
Profile Shape Check:
- Volume concentrated around one level → price spent time and activity there
- Thin rows between heavier areas → price moved through quickly
- POC near the edge of the range → activity concentrated at one end of the move

WHO IT'S FOR
This indicator is designed for traders who want to know where volume traded within a specific move, not just during a preset period.
If you care more about where activity concentrated inside a trend leg or consolidation than about a generic session profile, this tool was built with you in mind.
It's well suited for swing and intraday traders who want POC and Value Area references for a range they define themselves, structure-based traders who mark key swings and want to see what happened between them, and discretionary traders who use volume nodes as context for entries, exits, and targets.
The on-chart controls make it practical in real-time use: switch modes, toggle levels, and change the layout without opening the settings panel.
This is not a signal generator. It's a contextual framework for traders who read price through the volume distribution behind it.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT
Most volume profile tools work on preset ranges. This one works on the two bars you choose, and recalculates when you move them.
Most profiles are limited by the bars on your chart. This one automatically reads volume from the finest timeframe that covers your range, so the detail does not depend on the timeframe you are viewing.
Most tools offer one way to read the profile. This one offers Total, Up/Down, and Delta, with POC, Value Area, and volume labels, all switchable from the chart.
Multiple instances can run at once, each with its own anchors and its own settings.

UNDERSTANDING VOLUME PROFILE
A volume profile shows where activity accumulated across price during a chosen period, instead of when it happened. Rows with heavy volume mark prices where the market spent time trading. Rows with little volume mark prices it moved through quickly.
The Point of Control and Value Area summarize that distribution: the single most active price, and the zone around it that contains a chosen share of the total activity. They describe what has already happened. They are reference levels, not predictions.
This indicator is built on tick volume, as provided by your broker's data feed, and each bar's volume is spread across its price range. It is a bar-based approximation of the distribution, not a tick-by-tick reconstruction. Up/Down and Delta classify each source bar by its close versus its open, which makes Delta a measure of directional bar volume, not of actual order flow. Its value lies in giving a consistent, reproducible picture of the range you chose.
