Trend following is a style that enters in the direction of an established move and stays in until it weakens, using moving averages, breakouts or momentum. Robots built on it typically accept many small losses in exchange for occasional long runs.
A crossover bot goes long when a faster moving average crosses above a slower one and short on the opposite cross. Exits often come from the reverse cross or a trailing stop, and the knowledge-base sample trend cBot shows this logic with adjustable periods.
Compare the trend filter and its periods, the entry trigger, how stops trail, whether positions scale in, and any filter such as ADX that skips choppy markets. Test length matters too, because trend systems need many market phases to show their typical drawdown.
Without a sustained move, entries trigger on brief pushes that quickly reverse, producing a run of small losses known as whipsaws. Trailing exits also hand back part of each gain at a trend's end, and long flat or losing stretches can last months.
