HTF and Multi-Timeframe Indicators for cTrader

An HTF, or higher-timeframe, indicator calculates a study on a larger timeframe, such as H4 or the daily chart, and plots it over the timeframe you are viewing. An M15 chart can then show a daily moving average or H4 swing levels without switching charts.

The source timeframe and the study's period matter most, followed by whether values come only from closed higher-timeframe bars. Reading open bars updates sooner but lets the line move until that bar finishes, while step or smoothed plotting and colors mostly affect clarity.

Until a higher-timeframe bar closes, its value keeps updating, so a signal shown on an M5 chart during a forming H1 bar can shift or vanish. On older bars such tools often plot only final values, so history looks cleaner than it did in real time.

A common approach reads direction on the higher timeframe, for example price above a daily average, and then considers setups on the lower chart only in that direction. It cuts trades against the larger move but can miss early reversals, and the indicator only displays the filter; trades taken on it can still lose.

Only cTrader Windows and cTrader Mac load custom indicators, while the web and mobile apps offer built-in ones. After installing, add the dashboard to a chart, pick the timeframes it watches and try it on a few symbols, as the Help Centre suggests; free versions and trials exist too.
